Northcote-specific knowledge
We Know Northcote's Trees & Council Rules
Northcote falls under Darebin City Council, which protects trees through its Tree Protection Local Law 2019. A tree is generally classified as protected, and requires a permit before removal, where its trunk circumference is 100 centimetres or more, measured at 1.5 metres above ground, and the tree is over 8 metres tall. Both conditions need to be met, which is a slightly different test to the single-measurement thresholds used by some neighbouring councils, so it's worth having a qualified arborist confirm it rather than guessing.
Our arborists work Northcote's streets regularly, from the terrace blocks closer to High Street through to the properties nearer Merri Creek. Darebin's combined size and height test means a wide, low tree and a tall, narrow one can be treated differently even with similar overall bulk, which is exactly why we measure properly before recommending any removal.
Common trees we work on in Northcote:
River Red Gum
Manna Gum
English Elm
London Plane
Silver Birch
Golden Elm
Claret Ash
Desert Ash
Lemon-Scented Gum
Chinese Elm
